Mission Statement

Aim

The Institute aims to stimulate, promote, improve and influence the public and political debate about the role of public international law in international relations. This aim is pursued by:

  • Bridging the gap between the academic community and practitioners in international law, foreign policy and diplomacy and other relevant fields;
  • Analyzing current events in international relations, as well as international and national judicial processes with respect to international law;
  • Identifying solutions for the implementation of and compliance with international law in domestic and foreign policy;
  • Formulating alternatives for prevailing international norms in treaties, customary international law and doctrines;
  • Providing accessible information on international law and the role of international law in the foreign policy of states and in international relations.

Principles

  • International law is an important and positive factor in the promotion of friendly relations between states, peoples and persons, and in the realization of common goals.
  • The Institute is not dependent on any political organization, academic institution, government organ or commercial organization.

Vision

By stimulating and promoting the interaction between theory and practice in international relations, particularly with respect to international law, the Institute is an important partner in foreign policy decision-making. The Institute is also a permanent player in the public debate on international law and international relations and is the center for the proliferation of information about international law among the general public.

Goals

  • The Institute offers expertise, analyses and solutions for international legal questions based on research and continuous engagement with academics and practitioners;
  • The Institute and its staff are regularly consulted by the political community as well as corporations, media, attorneys and civil society for information and analysis of international law in current events;
  • The Institute and its staff regularly publish articles and books on the role of international law in international affairs.
